Working under the guidance of experienced journey level painters, you will develop fundamental skills and knowledge in the realm of painting and coating applications.Over the course of your apprenticeship, you will develop theoretical and practical knowledge in safe work practices, organizational techniques, and effective use of tools and equipment. You will also hone such skills as preparing surfaces for painting; applying paint, coatings, finishes, and wall covering procedures; and implementing colour theory.   • Participating in the preparation and application of painted and coated finishes on a range of surfaces, including walls, structures, furniture, and more.
  • Learning to interpret product and safety data sheets and providing input on product selection and application methods.
  • Assisting in measuring areas and calculating materials needed for painting projects.
  • Observing and gaining experience in coordinating work with subcontractors and other City departments.
  • Supporting experienced painters in diagnosing paint and coating failures and necessary maintenance.
  • Assisting in setting up work areas with proper traffic control, ventilation, and confined space entry when required.
  • Participating in informing relevant parties, such as agencies, businesses, and residents, about project details.
  • Contributing to the completion of records and reports related to safety, work orders, inspections, and more.
  • Assisting in surface preparation, which may involve sanding, scraping, patching, pressure washing, and other methods.
  • Learning to apply various materials, including paint, coatings, varnish, and specialty finishes.
  • Operating vehicles and trailers for equipment and material transportation.
  • Gaining experience with hand tools and power equipment, such as spray systems and scaffolds.
  • Assisting in routine maintenance and cleaning of painting equipment.
  • Learning to remove graffiti from City property as necessary.
  • Contributing to related duties within your capabilities.

INDEPENDENCE

  • Receive work assignments from journey-level Painters or supervisors through work orders or verbal instructions.
  • Completed work will be overseen and evaluated by experienced professionals to ensure quality standards.
  • Seek guidance from journey-level Painters or supervisors for aspects like adjusting work schedules or selecting appropriate colors.

WORKING CONDITIONSPhysical Effort:

  • Work from ladders, scaffolding, and aerial work platforms. (often)

QUALIFICATIONSFormal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

  • Completion of high school education.
  • Eligible for registration in a painter and decorator or related trades program.

Potential to obtain the necessary training and certifications as listed below:

  • Certificate of Trades Qualification in Painter and Decorator.
  • Eligibility to pursue a Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence.

As you progress in your apprenticeship, you will work towards achieving these qualifications, which will contribute to your growth as an Apprentice Painter.Experience:An Apprentice Painter requires at least 6 months of basic knowledge and experience related to tasks and responsibilities similar to those outlined in the position. This may involve hands-on engagement through projects, formal training and work exposure.
