Job description: ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITYBlack & McDonald is actively seeking a Utility Estimator to join our Southern Ontario Utilities team. The successful candidate will lead the team’s analysis of cost estimates and preparation of electrical/civil work take-offs on utility projects. They will provide technical support to project operations, with emphasis on electrical estimating, reporting and monitoring progress, planning, scheduling, and handling project change.Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Prepares electrical/civil work take-offs and estimates on utility projects including costs of materials, labour and equipment required for projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings and specifications
  • Advises on tendering procedures; examines and analyzes tenders, recommends tender awards and conducts negotiations
  • Establishes and maintains tendering process, sets up cost monitoring, reporting systems and procedures
  • Initiate price packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers and architects regarding tenders
  • Participates in site meetings, tender review, tender hand-off, and project closing, as required
  • Liaises, consults and communicates with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors, and prepares economic evaluation on changes and adjustments to cost estimates
  • Assist in material and equipment purchasing for secured key projects
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTSDegree or Diploma in:

  • Construction Engineering Technology
  • Construction Management
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical trade school

The following certifications/designations are considered an asset

  • Electrical/Civil trades background
  • Gold Seal Certified (GSC)
  • Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years’ estimating experience on utility construction (substation) projects
  • Experience estimating underground utilities an asset
  • Experience in renewable construction projects (e.g. wind, solar, EV battery storage)
  • Experience in electrical equipment buildings (e.g. switchgears, relays)

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTSProficient user of:

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Project)
  • Accubid, Bid2Win or any similar bidding software
