The Preparator plays a pivotal role in the realization of exhibitions at the museum, bridging the gap between conceptual designs and the physical staging of exhibits. This dynamic position involves installing and dismantling exhibitions, crafting display mounts, and ensuring the safe handling and presentation of objects and specimens according to museum standards. Collaborating closely with a diverse team of professionals, the Preparator contributes to the seamless execution of exhibitions, from initial planning to public engagement. Additionally, the Preparator is responsible for maintaining gallery spaces, managing lighting setups, and supporting the museum’s travelling exhibition program.   • Install and dismantle exhibitions following design plans, involving tasks like arranging to light, building display supports (cases, pedestals, metal supports), setting up graphic panels, and installing objects/specimens safely.
  • Use your creativity and expertise to create display mounts that meet museum standards. Ensure all collections are handled and preserved according to the latest museum practices.
  • Collaborate closely with Exhibition Project Managers, Designers, Curators, Technicians, and Conservators for flawless execution. Assisted in transporting objects for various purposes, including conservation and photography, and helped maintain accurate records in the collection database.
  • Take charge of gallery lighting, including routine maintenance and strategic planning with the design team to enhance exhibit presentations.
  • Test materials and develop mock-ups and prototypes to solve exhibition-related challenges. Employ innovative solutions to ensure optimal presentation.
  • Pack and unpack objects/specimens carefully, ensuring security and completing necessary documentation. Support the museum’s travelling exhibition program by preparing items for transport and contributing to creating installation manuals.
  • Perform regular maintenance tasks to keep gallery spaces and displays in top condition. This includes cleaning displays and reporting any damage or necessary changes to the Conservation team.
  • Act as an advisor on display conditions and constructability issues by reviewing design documents and installation plans. Record and communicate project needs to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Engage in ongoing education to enhance your skills in exhibition preparation. Recommend equipment repairs or upgrades to maintain a high standard of exhibit quality.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess a 3-year diploma or certificate from a community college or technical school in museum studies, fine arts, design, carpentry, or a similar field.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in exhibition setup, art handling, or collection management in a museum or art gallery setting.
  • Expertise in at least one area of exhibition preparation, such as object handling, mount making, packing and crating, gallery lighting, etc.
  • Proficiency in using a wide range of tools and equipment for exhibition preparation, including but not limited to matting, framing, welding, woodworking, and lighting setup.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as climbing, lifting heavy objects, kneeling, and bending. Good manual dexterity is essential.
  • Ability to read and interpret floor plans, drawings, and specifications. Familiarity with using stationary power tools and hydraulic lifting devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and make decisions without constant supervision.
  • Proven track record of solving complex technical problems creatively and effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills and working effectively within a team environment.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access). Knowledge of design software such as SketchUp and AutoCAD is an advantage.
