City official: Montreal watermain displayed signs of corrosion long before breaking

Recent reports on the major watermain break in Montreal have shed light on the city officials’ knowledge of the deteriorating pipe prior to the incident. The head of the city’s water service, Chantal Morissette, revealed that the pipe had shown signs of damage during an inspection in 2017 or 2018, but officials believed there was still time before repairs were necessary. Unfortunately, the pipe burst before further inspections could be conducted, leading to millions of litres of water flooding a neighbourhood near the Jacques Cartier Bridge.

The pipe involved in the water main break was identified as a C301 pre-stressed concrete pressure pipe, which is prone to corrosion that can cause catastrophic failures. Developed during the Second World War to reduce the use of steel, these pipes have a lifespan of over 50 years, but external factors such as road salts can accelerate corrosion.

Despite the challenges posed by maintaining and inspecting major water mains, Montreal has made significant investments in recent years to reduce the number of water main breaks by 50%. While repairs for the damaged pipe are estimated to cost $4,000 to $5,000 per cubic meter, the city’s proactive approach has ensured that 90% of the water network remains in good condition.

It is evident from this incident that proper maintenance and regular inspections are crucial to prevent such catastrophic failures. As cities continue to grow and infrastructure nears the end of its life, funding for replacements becomes increasingly important to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. The recent events in Montreal serve as a reminder of the importance of investing in infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Overall, the Montreal watermain break highlights the importance of proactive maintenance, investment in infrastructure, and the impact of external factors on aging pipelines. As cities continue to face challenges with their underground infrastructure, it is essential to prioritize the safety and resilience of these systems to avoid potential disasters.
