Spring Creek Community Achieves Platinum Level BUILT GREEN® Certification
Spring Creek community in Canmore, Alta. has recently obtained Phase 2 BUILT GREEN® Community certification at the prestigious Platinum level. This achievement follows the Phase 1 certification in 2022 and marks a significant milestone as the first certification from Built Green Canada’s Community pilot program.
The program emphasizes sustainable development categories that focus on human, neighborhood, and global performance. Spring Creek, originally a dairy farm in the 1920s and later a mobile home park in 1956, has since transformed into a thriving 28-hectare alpine community, with development commencing in 2004.
Spring Creek has been actively engaging with the BUILT GREEN® High Density and Single Family programs offered by Built Green Canada, a nonprofit organization with a strong track record of delivering holistic sustainable building programs for over two decades. These programs prioritize not only energy efficiency but also the preservation of natural resources, reduction of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, ventilation and air quality, home durability enhancement, and more.
The community showcases a diverse range of housing options, including condominiums, hotels, lodges, vacation rentals, townhomes, and housing for seniors that includes independent living, assisted living, and memory care accommodations. Affordable housing constitutes five percent of the development, emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility.
Furthermore, Spring Creek has incorporated geoexchange heating and cooling systems throughout the community, in addition to installing solar panel arrays. These initiatives are estimated to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable energy practices.
In terms of infrastructure, the community’s storm system is designed to withstand a one-in-100-year rainfall event, employing a combination of drainage systems to minimize flooding risks. Additionally, the design of the buildings and parkades complies with Alberta’s Flood Fringe data, ensuring resilience against potential flood events.
Developer and owner Frank Kernick shares his motivation for creating a sustainable community that preserves Canmore’s alpine charm and contributes to a more sustainable future for future generations. The community’s design prioritizes social and mental well-being, with streets designed to promote pedestrian and cyclist safety, adorned with trees and benches for residents to enjoy.
Overall, Spring Creek’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship is commendable. With a visionary master plan that extends far into the future, there is much anticipation for the continued growth and success of this special community.
