Classical cinematic narrative is transforming into a new culture of drama, gaming and fiction-based forms that merge traditional cinema, experimental literature, television, video, and the Internet. This seminar focuses on a range of contemporary film, video and digital artists who move across analogue and digital media forms to construct experimental narratives and to represent developing discourses of post-human existence and embodied imaginaries produced by media convergence. The course will present a range of contemporary theoretical approaches to frame analogue and digital narratives, including Peter Weibel’s “Future Cinema” and Katherine Hayles “How We Became Post-Human”. As well, key theoretical approaches to new multimedia narratives will be presented. The course involves weekly screenings and discussion of readings; assignments include a research paper and analytical essays.RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching and teaching-related responsibilities may include but are not limited to: course outline development, studio preparation and delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term evaluations and final evaluations/reviews; including responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The successful applicant should have a terminal degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience
  • Experience teaching at the post secondary level is considered an asset, equivalent relevant experience will be considered

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Sessional appointments are fixed-term annual contracts. Critical play exercises and play testing with fellow students will provide critical framing for iteration and developmental progression. Topics include game story flows, environment and level design, navigation, working with scripts, modifying game assets, optimization, effects, animation, rendering, and game states.
