Fire destroys iconic Kamloops bridge

The historic Red Bridge in Kamloops, B.C., built in 1936, was tragically lost to a fire on Sept. 19. This wooden Howe truss road bridge, spanning the South Thompson River, served as a crucial link connecting Kamloops to the Tk’emlúps Indian Band’s Reserve and industrial park, as well as offering an alternative route to the Yellowhead Highway and North Thompson District.

The original bridge, constructed in 1887 and known as the Government Bridge but commonly referred to as the Red Bridge, held significant cultural and historical significance for the community.

Kamloops deputy mayor Stephen Karpuk expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the Red Bridge, emphasizing the immediate emotional and physical impact on the city. As the community comes together to process this event, patience, calmness, and support for one another are paramount. The city council members, currently at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities annual conference, are working to arrange an emergency meeting with B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming to address the bridge’s destruction.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of heritage preservation and preparedness for unexpected disasters. As Kamloops mourns the loss of the Red Bridge, the community remains resilient and hopeful for the future.
