Jasper train station closures leading to disruptions in rail service causing delays at Port of Vancouver

The recent wildfires in Jasper National Park and the subsequent shutdown of rail traffic are expected to impact Canada’s supply chain, particularly in the movement of goods through key ports like the Port of Vancouver and the Prince Rupert Port Authority in British Columbia.

Canadian National Railway Co., the country’s largest rail operator, has suspended operations in the Jasper area, which serves as a crucial corridor for Canadian goods moving to export hubs in Vancouver and Prince Rupert. As a result, delays in the movement of goods are anticipated, with potential increases in anchorage utilization at the Port of Vancouver due to ships waiting on delayed cargoes.

The Port of Prince Rupert, the third busiest seaport in Canada, also expects to be impacted by the interruption of rail service connecting British Columbia and Alberta. While marine terminals continue to operate, some may experience delays.

Passenger rail traffic is also affected, with Via Rail temporarily halting operations through Jasper where scenic journeys through the Rocky Mountains to Vancouver and Prince Rupert typically depart.

As the situation continues to evolve, both ports are closely monitoring the developments and working with supply chain partners to ensure the safe and efficient movement of trade. Our thoughts are with the evacuees and wildfire crews working to bring the fires under control and restore this vital transportation corridor to full capacity.

For the latest updates on the situation in Jasper and its impact on the supply chain, stay tuned to reliable sources like The Canadian Press.

Construction begins at future Pape Station for Ontario Line

Construction has officially started on the future Pape Station, a vital part of the Ontario Line in Toronto. Ontario government representatives were present at the site on July 16th to announce the commencement of construction, signaling the beginning of an essential project that will greatly benefit commuters in the area. The new interchange station aims to connect the Ontario Line with TTC’s Line 2 (Bloor-Danforth), serving tens of thousands of commuters daily.

Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria highlighted that the construction at Pape Station has begun, focusing on building the necessary foundations for excavations that will connect the two subway lines seamlessly. Once completed, the 15.6-kilometer Ontario Line will encompass 15 stations, running from Exhibition Place through the downtown core, and linking to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. This extensive line will significantly improve access to public transit, bringing 227,500 more individuals within walking distance of transit and reducing daily car trips by at least 28,000.

The Ontario government is investing nearly $70 billion over the next decade to enhance public transportation infrastructure, with the Ontario Line being a key project in this initiative. The development of new subways like the Ontario Line is expected to revolutionize public transit, encouraging more people to opt for public transport over private vehicles.

Furthermore, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma emphasized the government’s commitment to building mixed-use communities around transit stations. The proposed transit-oriented community at the future Pape Station will introduce over 400 new housing units, including affordable options and larger units suitable for families. The development will also integrate retail and office spaces, catering to the needs of the local community and fostering economic growth in the area.

Public consultations have been conducted to gather feedback on the proposed Pape transit-oriented community, ensuring that the project aligns with the needs and aspirations of the residents. Additionally, work is underway to deliver similar transit-oriented communities at 12 future stations along the Ontario Line, the Yonge North Subway Extension, and the Scarborough Subway Extension, generating around 79,000 new jobs and 54,000 residential units, including affordable housing options.

In conclusion, the construction of the Pape Station and the upcoming Ontario Line signify significant progress in enhancing Toronto’s public transit network. With a strong focus on sustainability, accessibility, and community development, these projects will have a lasting positive impact on the city and its residents.

Engagement process for Surrey Langley Skytrain station design commences

The upcoming Surrey Langley Skytrain project is seeking public feedback on the design of eight stations that will be part of the new line. From June 18 to June 30, the public is encouraged to provide input on the station designs, entrances, and adjacent plazas through in-person open houses in Surrey and Langley, as well as a virtual information session.

The in-person open houses are scheduled as follows:
– Tuesday, June 18 at Hope Community Church in Surrey
– Thursday, June 20 at Hampton Inn and Suites in Surrey
– Saturday, June 22 at Fleetwood Community Centre in Surrey
– Wednesday, June 26 at Coast Langley City Hotel and Convention Centre in Langley

Additionally, a virtual open house will take place on June 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feedback can also be shared online from June 18 to June 30. This feedback will be used to finalize station designs through the municipal design advisory process. A second round of public engagement will occur in the fall to present the final designs, including details on landscaping and public art.

The Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension is set to begin major construction this year. This project is a significant development for the region, and public input is crucial in shaping the design and functionality of these new stations. Don’t miss your chance to have a say in this exciting project that will impact transportation in the area for years to come.

Chosen Contractor for Surrey Langley Skytrain Station Construction Revealed

South Fraser Station Partners has been selected by the Government of British Columbia to spearhead the design and construction of eight new stations for the Surrey Langley Skytrain project. The team, which includes Aecon Constructors, Acciona Infrastructure Canada Inc., Pomerleau BC Inc., and AECOM Canada Ltd., is set to work on the 16-kilometre extension of the Expo Line from King George Station to Langley City Centre. This project marks the first rapid-transit expansion south of the Fraser River in three decades.

Early works such as pre-construction site surveys, geotechnical drilling, and station design will commence as contract negotiations with South Fraser Station Partners get underway. In addition to these preparations, efforts are already in progress along the Fraser Highway corridor to relocate powerlines and gear up for major construction slated to begin this year.

The Surrey Langley SkyTrain project is divided into three separate contracts, with SkyLink Guideway Partners taking on the elevated guideway and associated roadworks, utilities, and active transportation elements. While requests for proposals were issued in early 2023, the competitive selection process for the systems and trackwork contract is still ongoing.

This project is not only a significant infrastructure development for the area but also a testament to the commitment of the Government of British Columbia to provide efficient and reliable transportation options for its residents. With multiple stakeholders joining forces to bring this project to fruition, the future of transportation in Surrey and Langley looks promising.
