Work at Ontario Place site paused pending court hearing on July 19th
The Ontario Place Protectors (OPP) has successfully halted further demolition at the Ontario Place site until their case is heard by Ontario’s Superior Court on July 19. This coalition of organizations and citizens was formed in response to the Doug Ford government’s proposals for Ontario Place, including plans to relocate the Ontario Science Centre building and introduce a spa with an indoor water park, a concert stage, and green space.
An Ontario Superior Court of Justice Civil Endorsement Form released on July 10 states that the applicant seeks to challenge legislation impacting Ontario Place and has a hearing scheduled for July 19, 2024. The province has agreed to suspend any permanent destruction of trees, shrubs, or buildings at Ontario Place until then.
OPP was initially formed in opposition to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act (ROPA), which was passed without legislative debate or public input. The group believes this law violates the Canadian Constitution and threatens Ontario’s democracy.
To stay updated on this issue, follow the author on X/Twitter @DCN_Angela. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for Ontario’s heritage, environmental, and planning laws.
